A study published in the December 2003 issue of Stroke suggests the risk of sudden death in stroke patients is increased with left hemisphere strokes more often than with right hemisphere strokes.

University Medical Center researchers in the Netherlands found that risk of sudden death with left hemisphere stroke was 45% higher than with right hemisphere stroke after adjusting for other risk factors for sudden death.

The researchers suggest the need for confirmation in studies designed specifically to examine the appropriate association.
